Why is the Stay at Home Order and Curfew necessary?

In a short period of time COVID-19 has rapidly spread throughout Hopi.  We all need to take these precautions for the preservation of public health and safety throughout the entire reservation and to ensure our healthcare delivery system can serve those who are sick.

Is the Stay at Home Order or Curfew mandatory or just guidance?

The Stay at Home Order and the Curfew order is mandatory. To help prevent the further spread of COVID-19 on Hopi and to protect our friends, neighbors, and vulnerable populations, please stay home.

What does it mean to “stay at home”?

The term “stay at home” means you must stay at home, leaving only for essential reasons such as traveling to get groceries or medicine, to get medical care, to get exercise for wellbeing, to take care of others, and for certain types of work.  You should significantly restrict your outside movement to only essential outings, to help stop the spread of the virus.

What does the Hopi Tribe Stay-at-home order allow?

Executive Order #001-2020 only allows for essential businesses to remain open.

Can I alternate my “staying at home” between my primary home and my family in town?

No – traveling back-and-forth to visit family or relatives away from Hopi, or going to a vacation property away from the reservation is not Essential Travel.

Does everyone in my family have to wear a face covering?

Beginning in March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made some recommendations, and individuals over the age of two and who are medically able will be advised to wear a face-covering when in a public place. Please practice and maintain six-foot social distance.

Face coverings can be items such as a bandanna, scarf, homemade mask, etc.

There are instructions for easy steps to make a homemade face covering on the CDC website:

Do I have to wear a face covering to work?

All Hopi Tribal government departments, grocery stores, and essential businesses will be required to provide face-coverings to all employees who are unable to maintain six-feet of social distancing. Businesses will also have to follow new requirements that maximize social distancing and prioritize the well-being of both employees and customers. Employees at non-essential organizations must follow the social distancing requirements and must wear a face covering when they may come within six feet of another employee or a customer.

What businesses are allowed to re-open under the new Stay at Home order?

Essential retail grocery stores and gas stations will remain open. The post office will remain open. You should continue to practice social distancing and please wear a face covering if you are unable to maintain social distancing.

What outdoor activities can I do now?

Going for a walk or run for your health and well-being is ok. Going to the gardens, corn fields, farms and ranches is acceptable.  You should continue to practice social distancing and please wear a face covering if you are unable to maintain social distancing.

Can I take my entire family out to go shopping?

No more than two people should go shopping. When possible send only one person from the family to visit the grocery store to pick up all foods and essential items.

What is the difference between the Stay at Home order and social distancing?

Social distancing is an important first step in preventing the spread of a disease like COVID-19 that allows people to go about their daily activities while taking extra health and safety precautions. The Stay at Home order requires people to remain in their homes unless they have an essential job or are doing an essential task like going to the grocery store.
